World Alzheimer's Day 2025

In Portugal, Alzheimer’s disease is increasingly prevalent among the general population, particularly those over the age of 65 and mostly women, who account for around 65% of cases.

Alzheimer’s disease (AD) causes degeneration of the brain cells leading to dementia, which is characterized by a decline in thinking and independence in personal daily activities.

Both the incidence and prevalence of dementia increase almost exponentially with age, doubling approximately every 5 years.

AD is responsible for 50-70% of all cases of dementia.¹

Alzheimer’s disease and other dementias prevalence has increased considerably in the last years, influenced not only by the increase in life expectancy and ageing population, but also by risk factors, such as obesity, diabetes and cardiovascular diseases.

Italy and Portugal are the two European Countries with the highest share of population that are aged 65 years and older (23.8% and 23.7%, respectively, vs 21.5% European average1), which explains the higher prevalence, in cases per 100k.

On this World Alzheimer's Day, we reflect on a disease that challenges the memory, autonomy and the very identity of those who live with it.

And because no one walks this path alone, we also remember the caregivers, who face everyday challenges and who, with daily gestures of love and resilience, support those who need it most 💜
